Give me Sneaky Sound System any day.
Since I can remember, electronic dance music has been my jam. When it all boils
down, I can safely say electronic dance music is my therapist and my lover; the thing that has got me through a breakup, a looming deadline, a late-night essay, a crying baby, a strange day etc. My secret circuit breaker. As humans we all have our modes of self-destructive behaviours that quietly creep up on us. The flow disruptors, the procrastination, the people pleasing.
8 Destructive behaviours that will keep you small:
● Chronic Procrastination: avoiding responsibility or creating last minute panic.
● People Pleasing: the apology that tumbles out our mouths for next to nothing at all.
● Perfectionism: setting out of reach standards, paralysing ourselves with fear.
● Emotional Detachment: overworking, piling more on our plate to avoid feeling.
● Numbing Ourselves: with work and substances to avoid feeling.
● Addiction to Drama: unconsciously seeking out toxic relationships that drains our life force.
● Catastrophising: Imagining the worst and creating unnecessary anxiety.
● Sabotaging Success: undermining an amazing opportunity right before a breakthrough.
Frankly it’s just exhausting. It was Zadie Smith from memory who pronounced what modest dreamers we have become. Life may feel comfortable, certainly not broken, spirit not soaring, mediocrity akin to madness but OK. It’s just another way sneaky self-destructive thoughts and behaviours keep us ‘safe’ and unseen. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but dancing/free movement gets me back in my body. I feel charged, I break the circuit. Within 10 minutes I can bust negativity, the sadness, the frustration and feel re-centred. I connect to my body and shake it off.
Sneaky Sound System is my antidote to Self-Destruction.
I’m curious, what’s your circuit breaker?
